Bruno Guimaraes delivers message to Sean Longstaff for Newcastle milestone

Sean Longstaff replaced Bruno Guimaraes in the Newcastle midfield on Sunday, and achieved a huge milestone in the process.

It was a shock to see the local lad in the Toon starting lineup against Wolves, with no rumours of an injury to Bruno.

But the Brazilian is set to miss the next couple of games, meaning Longstaff could have an extended run in the team. And he’ll be doing it as a man who has played 100 times for his boyhood club.

Longstaff congratulated for Newcastle milestone by Bruno

The 1-1 draw with Wolves was actually Longstaff’s 100th appearance for the club. That’s a very impressive feat for the academy graduate.

Longstaff made his first-team debut back in December 2018, coming off the bench in a defeat to Liverpool.

Now he’s reached 100 games in all competitions, and received a message of congratulations from teammate Bruno.

The Brazilian wrote on Twitter: “Proud of you @SeanLongstaff97.”

It will have been an incredibly proud moment for Longstaff, who signed a new contract with Newcastle at the start of the summer.

However, his outing against Wolves wasn’t his best appearance in a Toon shirt.

Longstaff struggled on his 100th appearance

The 24-year-old played at the base of midfield for Newcastle on Sunday, operating in the ‘six’ role. It’s usually played by Bruno or Jonjo Shelvey, but both were ruled out due to injury.

That forced Longstaff to play in that position, but it didn’t really suit him at all. While he did have some bright moments, they were overshadowed by his sloppiness in possession. He gave the ball away time and time again, as he looked to break the lines going forward.

There were times when he was able to pass forwards and break past the Wolves midfield, but they were few and far between.

It resulted in a disappointing afternoon for Longstaff, who will need to improve for as long as Bruno remains out injured.

Longstaff really struggled on his 100th Newcastle appearance, but should be immensely proud of his achievement regardless.
