Nick Pope’s penalty save was a pivotal moment in Newcastle United’s win over Crystal Palace.

Newcastle beat Crystal Palace 5-0 on Wednesday night to move up to third in the Premier League. However, things might have gone differently had it not been for Nick Pope saving Eberechi Eze’s first half penalty.

The Newcastle United goalkeeper easily saved Eze’s tame effort, having conceded the penalty himself after barging into Chris Richards in the box. Speaking to Geordie Boot Boys after the incident, former Premier League referee Mark Clattenburg was surprised by the decision.

Nick Pope atoned for his error, as Jason Tindall’s side went on to score four more goals themselves and blow Crystal Palace away.

That only intensified the atmosphere inside the stadium, while supporters got a little bit of help from Kieran Trippier.

While Eze got set to take his spot kick, Trippier was behind him geeing up the Newcastle United supporters in the Leazes End. He called on them to make some noise and make it as uncomfortable as possible for Eze.

The Toon supporters reacted, while Eze subsequently missed his penalty.

From that moment, the decibels increased even further. Just as Palace thought they were getting back into the game, there was a huge momentum shift as Newcastle went on a goalscoring spree.

Newcastle United pulled a similar trick on Wednesday night, with Glad All Over by the Dave Clark Five beginning to play. That song is an iconic club anthem for the Eagles, and Crystal Palace fans were not happy with what Newcastle did after the game.
