Newcastle United are very happy to get a point against Manchester United according to Kieran Trippier.
The Magpies held Erik ten Hag’s side to a 0-0 draw, with both sides missing good chances to win it. The first half belonged to Newcastle, with Joelinton hitting the woodwork twice. There was also a big penalty shout turned down despite Raphael Varane taking out Callum Wilson in the box.
But the second 45 was all about Newcastle’s defensive efforts. The Magpies had to be at their resolute best, and were able to keep their fourth clean sheet of the season.
Newcastle arrived at Old Trafford with a lot of confidence. We have been playing very well this season, and looked well equipped to compete with Man United.
Eddie Howe’s side did just that and more in the first half, but could not find the back of the net. Newcastle’s intensity was spot on, and it arguably should have led to more chances.
But Newcastle can be very proud of their performance, and it is another step in the right direction.
Trippier happy to draw against Man United
After the game, Trippier spoke to Sky Sports. The 32-year-old admitted that his side are very happy with the result and the performance, and went into more details about the Magpies’ change in philosophy this season.
“We’re absolutely delighted,” Trippier said.
“We’re delighted from the first game until now because we changed our philosophy, how we want to play. We want to go for teams and coming to Old Trafford we knew it was going to be difficult but we didn’t want to sit off. We wanted to press them and I think it was an entertaining game.
“To come away from Old Trafford with a draw and a clean sheet and the chances we had in the first half – so yeah we’re happy.”
Newcastle’s change of style evident at Old Trafford
We’ve seen already this season that Newcastle are not going to be scared of the ‘big six’. We went toe-to-toe with Liverpool and Manchester City, and the Red Devils were no different.
The first half in particular was an entertaining spectacle, although the second was a much tougher watch for Toon fans. But we dug in and got a deserved point.
Howe’s side are now five games unbeaten, and have still only lost once this season. That is very impressive, and a testament to the way Howe’s team are developing.
We aren’t a soft touch, nor are we a team that just defends in a low block. Newcastle want to get high up the pitch and win it in dangerous areas, and that very nearly led to victory against Man United.
But a draw should certainly be seen as a good result, and Trippier is right to be happy with a point.
