Alan Shearer reacts to Newcastle United’s 0-0 draw with Manchester United

Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has praised the Magpies’ organisation in the 0-0 draw with Manchester United.

Neither side could find the net at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon, with a point going to each side. While Eddie Howe’s side were very impressive the first half, a draw is a far result on the balance of play.

Man United will feel disappointed not to win themselves, having piled on the pressure in the final stages. Marcus Rashford will be particularly disappointed. He missed a sitter with his head in stoppage time.

But a draw is fair, and probably what most Toon fans would have taken before kickoff. It’s another point on the board for Newcastle, who remain in sixth position.

The Magpies are currently five games without defeat, and have still only lost once all season. While the past couple of weeks have been about Newcastle’s attack, it was the defensive efforts that stood out at Old Trafford.

And Shearer has had his say on the way his former side defended against the Red Devils.

After the game, Shearer took to Twitter to give his immediate thoughts.

He wrote: “A really good organised performance from the Toon. Had the chances to win, perhaps should be winning at places like that nowadays.”

Shearer is obviously having a bit of fun with claiming that Newcastle should now expect to in at places like Old Trafford. However, there was a real confidence among Toon fans going into the game. And we did have chances to win.

Newcastle were excellent in the first half. Our pressing was exceptional, and we forced Man United to play the game we wanted to play. We dominated most of the first half and had the best opportunities. However, we couldn’t apply the finishing touch.

Joelinton had Newcastle’s best chances. He hit the bar and the post in a matter of seconds. There was also a good opening for Bruno Guimaraes, who failed to react at the back post after a Kieran Trippier corner.

We also saw a penalty appeal turned down in the opening minutes, which seemed like it should have been given.

But a point is a good result, and Newcastle can be very happy with how they defended. We showed our resolute side once again, and Howe deserves a lot of credit for that.
