Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak believes that Fulham should not have been awarded a penalty after an incident in the second half on Sunday.
The Magpies beat Marco Silva’s side 1-0, but experienced a lucky escape as Aleksandar Mitrovic failed to score from the spot in the 69th minute.
The former Toon striker did hit the back of the net with his spotkick, but the goal was disallowed after the Serbia international touched the ball twice after he slipped.
It was an incident that was filled with controversy and left St James’ Park in a state of shock.
The initial penalty claim was when Dan Burn and Andreas Pereira collided in the box. From my seat, it looked like a stonewall penalty. Nothing was given, and play continued as tackles flew in outside the Magpies’ box.

Then there was another collision – this time between Kieran Trippier and Bobby Decordova-Reid. Nothing was given, as Newcastle went up the other end of the pitch and won a corner.
But before it was taken, referee Robert Jones was instructed to go to the screen before pointing to the spot for a Fulham penalty.
It then transpired that the penalty was given for Trippier’s challenge rather than Burn’s which seemed like a shocking decision.
Luckily it didn’t cost us, and Alexander Isak has now given his thoughts on what happened, having witnessed it close up as he warmed up on the touchline.
Isak’s view of the Fulham penalty incident
The 23-year-old spoke to NUFC TV after the game, having scored the winner in the 89th minute. He was asked to give his thoughts on the Fulham penalty debacle.
“I think it was two different situations,” he said.
“I was warming up, so I was close to the situation. The first situation he took it with his hand, so I think it should have been a free-kick to us.
“The second situation could have been a penalty, I didn’t see it too well, but I think it shouldn’t have been a situation because it should have been a free-kick to us before.”
So much going on, but Newcastle survive
It was a crazy period of the game that resulted in Fulham getting a penalty.
Burn certainly took a chance when he pulled Pereira in the box, but, as Isak says, it looks like the Brazilian midfielder uses his hand in the buildup.
But the Trippier incident was a bad decision. As you can see from the replays, Decordova-Reid clearly stands on Trippier. The Toon defender does not even make a challenge.
It was more farcical stuff from VAR, but luckily it did not matter. Mitrovic’s mishap ensured Newcastle’s clean sheet remained intact, and the Magpies were able to go on and secure victory.
