‘I’m laughing’… Ally McCoist spots Dan Burn’s ‘disappointed’ reaction during Newcastle United vs Chelsea

Newcastle United took a major step towards Champions League qualification on Sunday.

While it wasn’t pretty at times, Newcastle United beat Chelsea 2-0 to move third in the Premier League. Now, they are just three points from sealing a return to the Champions League

Eddie Howe’s side could still claim a second-placed finish in the Premier League table, which would be a remarkable achievement for the Newcastle United manager

Sandro Tonali got Newcastle underway at St James’ Park with a goal in the opening exchanges before Bruno Guimaraes settled any nerves with a deflected strike from range just before the full-time whistle.

Between those goals, the Blues almost got back into the game despite Nicolas Jackson’s red card for Chelsea against Newcastle. Nick Pope made two brilliant saves to deny them but, thankfully, Guimaraes put the fixture to bed with his late goal.

Speaking on TNT Sports commentary, pundit Ally McCoist noticed something funny from Dan Burn.

Ally McCoist spots Dan Burn’s hidden reaction as Newcastle United beat Chelsea

Burn, who went close with a header in the first half, played a key role in the second goal for Newcastle.

The towering defender controlled Sandro Tonali’s floated free-kick, dragged Pedro Neto out of position and found Guimaraes with an incisive pass.

Burn continued his run outside the Chelsea winger and into space, but Guimaraes instead drove forward and shot at goal, seeing his effort deflected off Malo Gusto and over Robert Sanchez into the Chelsea goal.

McCoist couldn’t help but notice Burn was disappointed he didn’t get the return, having burst forward in the final few minutes of the game after a monumental defensive effort.

“I’m laughing,” he said.

“I can’t help smiling at Dan Burn because he’s a little bit disappointed he didn’t get the ball back for a one-two.

“Wait until you see this, it’s brilliant. He takes it on his chest and plays a lovely little ball to Guimaraes and goes for the return pass.”

He added: “Watch this, a little give-and-go and the big fella gets on his bike here and he’s wanting it back, timing his run.”

Dan Burn isn’t Newcastle United’s slowest player

Burn has many qualities, but pace isn’t really one of them. The defender is a Newcastle United legend after scoring in the Carabao Cup final victory back in March, but it would be hard to describe him as particularly quick, at least by the standards of Premier League players.

That’s just not his strength. There are many other impressive facets to his game.

Still, it seems Burn isn’t actually the slowest player in the Newcastle United squad

In fact, some players think Matt Targett is Newcastle’s slowest player, which is relatively surprising to hear.
