I just saw ‘magnificent’ Newcastle United player send a clear message to Eddie Howe against Wolves

Eddie Howe shocked Newcastle United fans with his starting XI against Wolves.

The Magpies made three changes to the team that beat Tottenham Hotspur, with Harvey Barnes losing his place in the starting XI.

The 26-year-old had started in attack during the win over Spurs, playing on the left of attack with Anthony Gordon operating down the right. Barnes even got himself a goal that day, proving why he should be a starter for Newcastle United.

That is why it came as such a shock to see him dropped to the bench at Molineux. Barnes was replaced by Jacob Murphy, with Gordon getting to play in his preferred position of left wing.

However, a poor first half was followed by a half time triple sub, one of which saw Barnes introduced.

And what an introduction.

Harvey Barnes wins it for Newcastle against Wolves with incredible goal

In the 80th minute, Barnes scored the decisive goal as Newcastle United beat Wolves 2-1.

It was a ‘magnificent’ strike from Barnes, as he rifled an effort from distance into the top corner. Sam Johnstone dove for it, but he had absolutely no chance.

As soon as Barnes decided he was shooting, he was scoring. It was a trademark strike from an outstanding player, and a player who is enjoying an excellent start to the season.

Newcastle’s number 11 has scored two goals this season, while he has also provided one assist. He has been pivotal in key moments, which has summed up his entire Toon career.

In Barnes’ 25 Premier League appearances for Newcastle, he has scored seven goals and provided four assists. According to Opta, he is averaging a goal or an assist in the Premier League every 87 minutes.

Barnes needs to start for Newcastle moving forwards

While Howe will argue that Barnes is having a major impact off the bench, most will argue that the winger should be starting.

With Newcastle United failing to sign a winger during the summer transfer window, there is an opportunity for someone. Howe wanted an upgrade on Jacob Murphy and Miguel Almiron, yet has two top class players vying to play on the left.

But with Gordon capable of operating on the right, it is absolutely vital that Barnes becomes a regular starter. He is clinical in the final third, and is proving exactly why Howe was so keen to sign him from Leicester City last year.

Next up for Newcastle United is Fulham away, and it would be a major shock if Barnes was not in the starting XI.

It was a surprise to see him dropped against Wolves, and his 45 minute display proved why he should be starting.

While it is great to have game-changing substitutes available, Barnes has shown why he should be more than just an impact player.
