Eddie Howe got the chance to give some of his Newcastle United youngsters a run out against Rangers, many of which impressed at Ibrox.

Harrison Ashby scored the Magpies’ winning goal, while Alex Murphy looked very assured at the heart of the Newcastle defence.

But the pick of the bunch was 17-year-old Lewis Miley, who once again delivered at senior level despite his tender age.

The teenager was excellent at the weekend against Gateshead, providing the assist for the winner and ending the game as captain. That was a major moment in his very young career, and now Miley has impressed against even stronger opposition.

Miley replaced Sandro Tonali at half time against Rangers, and produced a display that made you easily forget just how young he is.

He already looks like he belongs in the Newcastle midfield, and Howe was ecstatic with what he saw from the local lad.

Eddie Howe delighted with ‘technically excellent’ Lewis Miley

Following the win over Rangers, Howe spoke to BBC Newcastle, who asked him about Miley’s performance.

“He did really well,” he said.

“Probably in that second 45 we needed five or 10 minutes just to settle into the game with a lot of changes.

“But I thought Lewy grew into the game and made some vital interceptions and defensive contributions. Athletically, I think he’s really good – he moves well and covers the ground. He’s a good size and technically excellent.

“He’s got a really bright future.”

Newcastle have a star in the making

Miley looked very comfortable at Ibrox, not fazed by the atmosphere or the level of quality around him. As Howe says, it is very clear that he has a bright future ahead of him.

The issue for Newcastle is how do they nurture his development. He clearly has the ability to play at senior level now, so a loan move could be a good option.

But if he temporarily departs, it means Howe won’t be able to have as much of an impact on his progression.

It is a similar problem to the one Newcastle have with Elliot Anderson. He isn’t going to be a regular starter, but is clearly capable of being influential in a black and white shirt. But he is at an age where he needs to be playing regularly.

However, Anderson is clearly on the right path, and benefitted from staying at St James’ Park last season rather than going out on loan. It feels likely that the club will do the same with Miley, although he will do well to feature this season given the amount of midfield competition he has.
