Newcastle United were left very frustrated after their draw with Luton yesterday, but Harvey Barnes was very proud of one thing the team did.

There was lots that Newcastle got wrong yesterday and lots that they need to learn from, but it wasn’t all doom and gloom like some fans on social media would have you think.

Speaking after the game with NUFCTV, Barnes claimed that he was was very happy with the ‘character’ that Newcastle showed to come back from 4-2 down to level things up.

Barnes says Newcastle have an unbelievable team spirit

If there’s one thing you can give Eddie Howe huge praise for it would be what he’s done to improve the attitude of players in difficult games like these where they have to dig deep to find a result.

So many times last season Newcastle had found themselves in a tough position and came out on top because of their determination to come back stronger and go on to win the game or at least draw level.

Against Luton, everything seemed to be going wrong as the visitor’s scored their fourth and were in control of the game, but having players like Kieran Trippier and Bruno Guimaraes spurred Newcastle on to fight back.

It was also great to see Barnes back out on the pitch after such a long time out with injury and to top it off with a goal to make it 4-4 was the perfect way to mark his return.

In the interview, Barnes said: “This team’s built on character, we showed that in abundance today. Disappointing thing is you don’t want to be 4-2, you want to be leading the game controlling the game like we were earlier on.

“But when we are in that position the team’s going to keep fighting like we did. We were pushing for the winner at the end, it didn’t come but there’s definitely positives.”

Newcastle really needed strength in depth

It’s safe to say that Newcastle were the better team on Saturday in terms of quality, but what they really lacked is strength in depth after what was a disappointing January transfer window.

Seeing what a difference Barnes could make coming off the bench just reiterated to supporters how useful it can be to have different options, a luxury that Newcastle have rarely been afforded this season.

Their luck with injuries doesn’t seem to be getting too much better either with Anthony Gordon pictured leaving the stadium on crutches, though the hope is that it isn’t as bad as it looks.

The very last thing Newcastle need is for their star player to pick up a knock after what has been such an impressive season.
