‘Had a great game’: Sean Longstaff thought 22-year-old Newcastle player was unreal on Saturday

Saturday was one of those days when everything went right for Newcastle United, with Sean Longstaff one of multiple Toon players to impress.

The 25-year-old scored the Magpies’ third goal of the afternoon, capitalising on a mistake from Marc Guehi to grab his third of the season so far and equal his tally from last year. It was an easy goal for Sean Longstaff, who had all the time in the world to find the net.

Away from his goal, it was another strong performance from the Newcastle midfielder, who is one of various Toon players who Gareth Southgate should be paying attention to.

Another is Anthony Gordon, who also found the net on Saturday. He got the second of the game, making up for a horrendous miss earlier in the afternoon.

The 22-year-old is playing the best football of his career, and Longstaff has admitted that he was very impressed with Gordon’s performance against Crystal Palace.

After the 4-0 win over Palace, Longstaff spoke to the Chronicle and took time to name some of the teammates that impressed him during the victory.

“It was a great day all round though,” he said.

“We had Callum Wilson back and Jacob Murphy was excellent and Anthony Gordon had a great game too.”

Newcastle’s English players send another message to Gareth Southgate

With five goal contributions to his name, Gordon has been one of Newcastle’s best players this season.

He was brilliant yet again on Saturday, and is starting to find real consistency. Seeing him play as well as he did is no longer a surprise, and that is why he is so dangerous this season.

And it is why England should be paying attention. Given his exploits for Newcastle and the England Under-21s, Gordon has to be on Southgate’s radar.

So does Longstaff, who looks to have taken his game to an even greater level this season. He is deserving of an England callup too, as Eddie Howe’s players continue to hit new heights week after week.
