Newcastle United made light work of Manchester United on Monday night.
While Old Trafford has not been a happy hunting ground for Newcastle over the years, Eddie Howe’s cruised to a 2-0 victory to reclaim fifth spot in the Premier League table.
In truth, Newcastle really could and should have scored more. It was that routine.
It was only their drop in intensity that allowed the hosts back into the game and even then, they couldn’t score.
Howe’s side are now on a five-game winning streak in all competitions and the prospect of a cup final and Champions League qualification are very much on the cards.

Though the story should be about Newcastle of course, it was also difficult to get away from quite how bad Ruben Amorim’s side were.
Joshua Zirkzee, after all, was sarcastically cheered off when being replaced in the first-half. That’s how toxic things got.
Speaking about the vast difference in quality between the two sides, Red Devils legend Gary Neville named the only two Manchester United players he believes would get into Newcastle’s team.

Neville believes Andre Onana would start ahead of Martin Dubravka, albeit it must be said that he’s only standing in for the injured Nick Pope anyway.
The pundit also tipped Amad Diallo to start over Jacob Murphy.
Neville hinted Harry Maguire may be good enough too, though did not seem confident enough to conclusively say he’d start.
“An in-form Andre Onana over Dubravka, I would take Amad over Murphy but then I was struggling with the rest,” he said on Sky Sports.
“Maguire, maybe with the form he’s been in, but I don’t think at this moment in time Eddie Howe would be switching may of his players for those in red shirts.”
Ruben Amorim made a big statement about Newcastle after watching Manchester United get beaten
Such was the dominance of Newcastle’s display, particularly in the early part of the first-half, Amorim was left with no choice but to admit the vast gulf in quality.
After the game, the Portuguese tactician claimed Newcastle were just a “better team”, which perhaps was actually an understatement.
Newcastle looked a cut above from the off and surely would have inflicted more damage upon their opponents had the game not come during the frantic festive fixture schedule.
