Eddie Howe was really impressed with his Newcastle United team against Wolves yesterday.
There was one man in particular who he thought stood out and really helped the side secure their first win at St James’ Park in 2024.
Speaking to NUFCTV after the game, Howe claimed that Alexander Isak had been ‘outstanding’ after grabbing the opening goal which proved to be huge for the rest of the game.
Howe says Isak is a ‘match winner’
It wasn’t a particularly dominant game in terms of the possession as it was Wolves who saw more of the ball, but Newcastle always felt in control of the game.
Grabbing an early opener definitely gave the team some much needed confidence after the disappointing display against Arsenal last week and they grew into the game.
Isak looked closer to getting back to his best after returning from another injury and the Swedish international was key in the high press that proved so effective once again.
For his goal, the striker showed why he is the top goalscorer at the club with 15 as he gambled on being in the right place at the right time and was able to head home a deflected Bruno Guimaraes cross.
On Isak, Howe said: “He’s an outstanding player. Our only disappointment this year is that we haven’t had him fit and available for all the games because he is a match winner.
“He’s capable of doing a little bit of everything in that role, he can also drift positions, he’s technically excellent.
“Really pleased with the goal today because he’s come back from another minor injury but it stopped his rhythm and momentum that he was in because he was in a good period of form.
“Hopefully he can rediscover that form quickly now.”

Newcastle grab huge win over Wolves
Newcastle were in desperate need of three points after slipping down to 10th in the Premier League and behind Saturday’s opponents who had won four of their last five games.
If Newcastle were to have any hopes of qualifying for a European competition next season then it felt like they had to take all three points in this fixture or lose serious ground in the race for seventh.
Despite picking up points in the last couple of months the defence had always looked a bit shaky, but against Wolves there was finally some confidence and definitely an improved performance.
Now, attentions turn to a huge game against Chelsea next Monday night as they hope to end the season on a brilliant run of form and push themselves back into the European positions.
