Dubravka and Fraser impress: Newcastle player ratings vs Liverpool

Newcastle United fell to a 3-1 defeat to Liverpool on Thursday night.

It was an improved performance from Eddie Howe’s side, who were battered 4-0 by Leicester on Sunday.

But who impressed for the Magpies, and who didn’t? Here are our player ratings from a frustrating night at Anfield.

Martin Dubravka – 7/10

Could do absolutely nothing about Liverpool’s third goal – a rocket from Trent Alexander-Arnold. But Dubravka made some good saves at Anfield, including one to deny Diogo Jota before the Reds forward hammered home the rebound.

Javi Manquillo – 7/10

The Spaniard was probably Newcastle’s best defender at Anfield. Manquillo limited Sadio Mane’s impact, and continues to be the Magpies’ most consistent defender.

Fabian Schar – 5/10

Caught off guard for Liverpool’s second goal. The usual mistakes were there from Schar, who really doesn’t suit playing in a back four.

Jamaal Lascelles – 5/10

The captain could easily have conceded another penalty, pushing Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain in the area. Another tough night for Lascelles.

Jamal Lewis – N/A

Withdrawn early due to injury.

Jacob Murphy – 5/10

Spent most of the night defending. Poor in possession when he did get the chance, and will be lucky to keep his place on Sunday against Manchester City.

Isaac Hayden – 5/10

Clearly injured for the Liverpool opener. But his first start under Howe was nothing to get excited about. Hayden provided his usual endeavour, but did nothing to suggest he should be a regular starter.

Jonjo Shelvey – 6/10

It was a dramatic first half for Shelvey. He scored a stunner to give Newcastle the lead, then handed Liverpool the lead with a wayward pass.

Joelinton – 7/10

Deployed in midfield alongside Shelvey and Hayden, Joelinton worked tirelessly in an unfamiliar position.

Ryan Fraser – 7/10

Probably Newcastle’s best player against Liverpool. Fraser played important roles in our best moments going forwards, and was denied a clear penalty.

Allan Saint-Maximin – 6/10

Exciting when he got possession, but decision making continues to be a big issue for Allan Saint-Maximin.
