Newcastle United played out a Premier League classic against Manchester City on Sunday, and the result has left Callum Wilson disappointed.
St James’ Park witnessed a special game of football that ebbed and flowed in every direction, only for the two teams to share the points at the end of the 90 minutes.
Newcastle went behind early to an Ilkay Gundogan goal, and it looked like it could be a grim afternoon after that.
However, Eddie Howe’s side rallied and began to shockingly dominate the game. Goals from Miguel Almiron and £20million signing Wilson turned the tie on its head, then Kieran Trippier’s world class free kick gave Newcastle a two goal cushion.
But it wasn’t enough to keep Man City at bay. They found a way back like they always do, with goals from Erling Haaland and Bernardo Silva making it 3-3.
In the end, a draw was a fair result. But given how well Newcastle played and the fact they were two goals up, there is a sense of disappointment. And that speaks volumes about how well the Magpies did.
Wilson on Newcastle vs Man City
After the game, Wilson spoke to NUFC TV. He shared how he was feeling after the result.
“Disappointed,” he said.
“That’s saying something playing against one of the best teams in the world, to be disappointed after 90 minutes shows how far we have grown as a team.
“To go 3-1 in front is kind of a cushion that you are never even comfortable with against these guys. You take the point, we’re still unbeaten and move on.”
Newcastle have come so far
To be disappointed after getting a point against the champions says it all. It shows how far Newcastle have come under Eddie Howe.
It wasn’t long into his tenure when we played Man City last season. Pep Guardiola’s side blew us away 4-0 shortly before Christmas when relegation was looming.
Even in the return fixture at the Etihad when we were much improved, we still got battered. A 5-0 hiding showed we were still a long way off that elite level.
But Newcastle stepped up on Sunday. We found ways to hurt the champions time and time again. To score three against them is really impressive.
Sure, we conceded three, but their attacking talent is out of this world. Even though he picked the ball out of the net three times, goalkeeper Nick Pope played brilliantly.
There’s not much more Newcastle could have done. A two goal lead can be dangerous, as you don’t know whether to sit back or keep pushing forward.
Howe’s side put so much into the game, and Wilson is right to feel disappointed. It sums up the attitude switch that even a point against a team like Man City isn’t enough.
But a point is all we got, and our unbeaten start to the season continues.
