Newcastle United were able to beat Arsenal without Bruno Guimaraes.

There was concern ahead of Newcastle United’s Carabao Cup semi-final first leg against Arsenal. Not only was Fabian Schar suspended, but so was Bruno Guimaraes.

The latter’s absence was particularly worrying, as Newcastle’s record without Bruno Guimaraes has been terrible. Until Tuesday night’s game at the Emirates, the Magpies had not won without the Brazilian midfielder since he joined the club.

But that has now changed, as Newcastle beat Arsenal 2-0 to get Toon fans really dreaming of a return to Wembley.

Bruno Guimaraes reacts to Newcastle United beating Arsenal

Alan Shearer said Newcastle were outstanding against Arsenal, and now Bruno Guimaraes has given his verdict on his teammates’ performance.

Following the Magpies’ win in North London, the 27-year-old took to X to deliver his instant reaction.

Bruno wrote: “What a performance for everyone!!! We go for more. Howay the lads.”

Newcastle United coped so well without Bruno against Arsenal

Not having Bruno against the Gunners was a big worry ahead of kickoff.

Newcastle’s midfield three has been so good in recent weeks. The trio of Bruno, Sandro Tonali and Joelinton have been described as the best in the Premier League.

But they were broken up on Tuesday night, with Joe Willock coming into the starting XI.

The 25-year-old played well in Bruno’s absence, getting close to Alexander Isak and helping with the press.

In the second half, it was all about Newcastle’s low block. Eddie Howe went to a 5-4-1 formation and then a 5-5-0, with Sean Longstaff replacing Willock.

It was an outstanding defensive cameo from the academy graduate, who has not featured much in recent weeks.

But Longstaff played a big part in the Carabao Cup semi-final first leg, as Newcastle United gave themselves an incredible chance of returning to Wembley.

If Newcastle do reach the final, they will play against Liverpool or Tottenham Hotspur on March 16th.
