Bruno Guimaraes says Eddie Howe has wanted him to improve his heading at Newcastle

Bruno Guimaraes had never scored a header before joining Newcastle United in January. Now he has scored two.

His first came last season in the win over Leicester, with Bruno’s diving effort handing the Magpies all three points in the dying seconds.

And his second header came on Saturday. It was the opener in the 5-1 win over Brentford, as Bruno produced a man of the match display, scoring twice.

His first came from a cleverly worked corner. Miguel Almiron unusually stood over it, before passing it to Kieran Trippier deep in the attacking half.

The right-back delivered a glorious first-time cross. It was full of pace and whip, and fell perfectly into the path of Bruno.

The Brazil international still had a lot to do. However, he was able to convert his stooping header beyond David Raya and into the net.

It was a clever goal, and Bruno has given the credit to manager Eddie Howe.

After the game, Bruno spoke to NUFC TV. He was asked about scoring with his head again, and paid tribute to his manager for the goal.

“The gaffer has a big work because when I arrived here he told me ‘Bruno, I watched your DVD and you never score with your head. I will work with you and you will score with the head’,” he said.

“After this I already score two goals. Thanks gaffer, you are important to my life. I want to keep going with this. I’m really very happy.”

However, Howe has been quick to direct the glory elsewhere. The Toon boss was told about the praise Bruno had heaped on him, and Howe could only laugh at what his midfielder had said.

Howe instead gave credit to Jason Tindall and the other coaches, as well as Trippier for the delivery.

Regardless of who is to thank for it, it was a fantastic goal scored by Newcastle. And it set the Magpies on their way to an emphatic victory.

The post-match interviews are a great watch, and sums up the feelgood factor among the group at the moment. Bruno clearly loves working with Howe, and the feeling is reciprocated.

Whether the goal was down to Howe’s words of wisdom, Bruno’s work on the training ground or Trippier’s cross, the main thing is that it went in.

Newcastle are scoring all kinds of goals this season, and all signs point towards a promising campaign.
