Newcastle United extended their winning run and advanced in the FA Cup on Sunday.

The Magpies didn’t have it easy though, Bromley took the lead after just eight minutes but youngster Lewis Miley levelled the tie with a stunning strike from 25 yards.

It’s eight wins in a row for Eddie Howe’s side, but a sign they can rely on other players in Newcastle’s first-team squad for goals in Alexander Isak’s absence.

Bromley head coach Andy Woodman marked an emotional return on Sunday – he was Newcastle’s goalkeeping coach during Alan Pardew’s reign at the club until 2015. He was a member of the backroom staff offered eight-year contracts by Mike Ashley in 2012.

Woodman revealed his “obsession” with Howe in a recent interview, praising him for his mindset and the way he has implemented his ideas into the club.

The win saw William Osula bag his first Newcastle goal which Howe admitted is something he doesn’t do a lot in training. Fans will be eager to see the 21-year-old feature in Howe’s squads in the near future after his display.

Going behind was sure to be a shock to the system for Newcastle. Bromley nearly made it 2-0 a few minutes later when they saw an effort fired just wide of the post.

Now, Woodman has spoken about his feelings on the game and one moment in particular that he won’t forget.

Andy Woodman on his Newcastle return

It ended up being a comfortable win for the Magpies thanks to a lively second half which saw Anthony Gordon and Osula find the net.

The Bromley boss is the father of former Newcastle shot-stopper Freddie Woodman who now plays for Championship side Preston.

Woodman spoke to BBC Sport following his side’s defeat. The 53-year-old was asked about his feelings following the game – there was one moment that he’ll live to rue.

“It was lovely. We got the goal that gave us a little bit of hope,” he said.

“That’s what the FA Cup is about – to give us hope we can do something today. It was nice to score a goal at Newcastle and a good goal.

“I’ve been saying to Cam (Congreve) he needs to be more positive in the final third and driving him mad to get that into his game. He picked the right stage to do it. I’m chuffed for him.

“Who knows if we’d have got that (second goal)?

“We conceded when we had a man off the pitch. I’ll be up late tonight thinking if we’d had 11 players on the pitch who knows?

“The FA Cup allows you to dream big.

“They’re a class team, class staff and class club. We gave them a game. We had to be patient and disciplined. To get beaten by the quality of goals, I’m proud of my team. The way we got beaten was the right way to get beaten.

“I had a little moment this morning. This time last year we were playing at Maidenhead and now we’re playing at St James’ Park. I had a little moment today and I’m really proud of the journey. I was chuffed for the players.

Although on the receiving end of it, Newcastle’s win against Bromley will surely live in Woodman’s memory for many years.

Newcastle handed FA Cup fourth-round away tie

It isn’t expected to be easy for the Magpies to reach a second successive FA Cup fifth round – they’ve drawn League One leaders Birmingham City away.

It’ll be the first meeting between the two sides since 2017 when the Blues held Rafael Benitez’s Newcastle to a 0-0 draw.

Their last meeting in the FA Cup also came the same year with the Magpies drawing 1-1 at St Andrews before beating them 3-1 in the replay at St James’ Park.

The stories are much different now, like Newcastle, Birmingham were taken over and have spent big since their relegation from the Championship last season. The £20million purchase of Jay Stansfield was one particular deal that caught the eyes of many.
