Alan Shearer has given his delighted reaction after Newcastle United got their first Champions League win of the season.
It’s been a disheartening few weeks for Newcastle United but you wouldn’t be able to tell from the confident performance Eddie Howe’s side put in against Royale Union Saint-Gilloise on Wednesday night.
Newcastle have suffered agonising defeats to Barcelona and Arsenal recently, so were in need of an emphatic victory and that’s just what they got in Brussels, winning 4-0.
Nick Woltemade flicked in the opener before two penalties from Anthony Gordon, either side of half-time, secured the three points.
There was still time for Harvey Barnes to get in on the act, though, with the substitute finishing off a devastating counter-attack.
Now Alan Shearer has given his instant reaction to the result.

Newcastle legend Shearer was keeping a close eye on proceedings at Lotto Park, with Newcastle playing in the early European time slot.
Giving his instant reaction on X, formerly Twitter, upon the full-time whistle, Shearer posted: “A great away performance.
“Exactly what was needed #ToonToon #ChampionsLeague.”
The iconic striker was also pleased with what he saw in the opening 45 minutes after Newcastle had controlled the game and, at last, taken their chances and made their dominance count.
He posted at the break: “A fantastic first half from the Toon #ChampionsLeague,” accompanied by a black love heart emoji.
Newcastle end long wait after win vs Union Saint-Gilloise
Newcastle have been waiting a long time to pick up an away win in the Champions League.
Howe’s side failed to defeat any of Paris Saint-Germain, Borussia Dortmund or AC Milan when they last qualified for the prestigious tournament two years ago, which ensured they finished bottom of their group.
You have to go all the way back to February 2003, well over 22 years ago, since the Magpies last won an away game in the Champions League.
Funnily enough, that came in a 3-1 victory over Bayer Leverkusen, who they will visit in this year’s league phase on December 10.
Shola Ameobi got a brace that night in Germany, with Lomana LuaLua grabbing the third.
