Alan Shearer shocked by £40m Newcastle star against Chelsea

Newcastle United put Chelsea to the sword in the Premier League on Saturday.

After heading into the international break in dire shape amid an injury crisis that refuses to subside, Newcastle ran out winners against a Chelsea team who recently beat Tottenham and drew with Manchester City.

In the end, it all proved rather comfortable for the Toon. Three later goals in the second-half inflated the scoreline but, at times, it was not easy.

Indeed, Raheem Sterling had cancelled out Alexander Isak’s opener and Joelinton missed a wonderful chance to put his team back in front, much to the surprise of Alan Shearer.

Newcastle vs Chelsea: Alan Shearer shocked by Joelinton’s miss

After Sterling had levelled the scores for the Blues with a fine free-kick, the Brazil international had the chance to put his team back in front.

Having created some space for himself from a corner with some clever movement, however, Joelinton somehow put a header wide from close range with the goal gaping.

Shearer, in response, simply tweeted a shocked emoji – perhaps summing up the collective feeling of the fanbase at the time.

Having also missed a sitter against Borussia Dortmund, it looked like another frustrating day for the £40m star.

Joelinton: Newcastle star makes up for miss against Chelsea

Luckily, Joelinton made up for it.

Pouncing on a rare mistake from compatriot Thiago Silva, he raced onto a loose back pass by the defender and slotted one past Robert Sanchez in composed fashion.

He might not be perfect in front of goal, but the work ethic for which he is so popular among the supporters was on full display there.

With Jamaal Lascelles having made up for his mistake in the build-up to Sterling’s free-kick by scoring himself, its obvious this Newcastle side do not let errors impact them.

Mentality monsters.
