Newcastle United now face the very real prospect of dropping out of the Champions League at the first hurdle.
Indeed, that glorious win over Paris Saint-Germain feels a long time ago after Borussia Dortmund beat Newcastle for the second time in as many Champions League outings.
While Eddie Howe’s injury-stricken side certainly gave a good account of themselves, it was disappointing to see them fail to create much in the way of clear cut chances.
Other than the one that fell to Joelinton, of course.
With the score at only 1-0, the Brazilian headed a lovely cross from Tino Livramento wide when it appeared easier to score.
Joelinton: How Eddie Howe reacted to Newcastle star’s miss
Indeed, Howe’s reaction was picked up on by the Daily Mail’s Craig Hope.
“Tino Livramento delivered from the right and the Brazilian only had to turn in an unmarked header from inside the six-yard area,” he wrote.
“Somehow, he glanced wide. Howe buried his head in his hands. If only it was his brow on the end of it. Even at 45, the former defender would have converted from there.

Borussia Dortmund vs Newcastle: Those are the margins
While Dortmund did have more of the chances, they were clinical enough when they needed to be.
Newcastle, however, wasted what few opportunities they created across both games.
Those, sadly, are the margins in tight games at this level. You simply cannot miss a chance like that and expect not to be punished when playing Europe’s best teams.
It’s a shame for Joelinton, who was excellent against Arsenal. Still, it is a reminder that – for all his qualities – there remain flaws in his game.
Lacking the firepower of Alexander Isak and having seen Callum Wilson go off injured, Newcastle really could have done with their £40m star keeping his composure.
