At the end of the game, Shearer tweeted his instant verdict, hailing the quality and togetherness of the performance.

The result means that Newcastle put some pressure on their rivals in the relegation dogfight before they all kick off later this weekend.

Shearer had already called goalscorer Joe Willock the best player on the pitch in the first half as Newcastle went in level at 1-1 at the interval.

It was Willock’s first goal of the season, as he improvised a deft finish to poke over the line after a rare mistake from Declan Rice.

This was a performance of real quality against a side who have genuine top four ambitions and Newcastle arguably deserved the win.

They played some fantastic football, and built on the foundation of a really solid defensive performance which was only undone by a set piece.

This result was more impressive because it was secured without injured talismen Kieran Trippier and Allan Saint-Maximin.

Another former Newcastle striker in Mick Quinn also tweeted his reaction, hailing the continuation of the unbeaten run which has taken the club five points clear of relegation danger as it stands at full-time.
