Newcastle face Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday, and pundit Chris Sutton has predicted what the result will be.
The former Blackburn striker has predicted every Premier League game this weekend, and thinks the Magpies will get a point against Erik ten Hag’s side.
Eddie Howe will be looking for three wins on the bounce, and his side will have no fear against the Red Devils. Newcastle have already proven this season that they are not afraid of the big teams, going toe-to-toe with Manchester City and Liverpool.
Manchester United will represent a slightly different challenge, but it will still be an incredibly difficult game. The Magpies’ record at Old Trafford is shocking. The last time we won there was December 2013, and before that it was 1972.
Sutton doesn’t expect Newcastle to stop the rot on Sunday, but does anticipate a sharing of the spoils.
Sutton predicts a draw between Man United and Newcastle
As part of BBC Sport’s Premier League predictions, Sutton has given his thoughts on Newcastle’s trip to Old Trafford.
He expects it to be a draw, and predicts the game to end 1-1.
“I don’t think Manchester United will win this. The only question is, will Newcastle take three points home, or just one?,” he wrote.
“It’s not that I don’t feel Manchester United are making progress under Erik ten Hag, because they are.
“But I fancy Newcastle because they have been taking the game to their opposition, and the goals have started to flow – they have scored nine in their past two matches.
“I can’t see Magpies boss Eddie Howe changing his approach at Old Trafford, because that’s not his style.
“That should make things more open, which might help Manchester United. The trouble for them is that everyone scrutinizes their every result so much and it is always painted as triumph or disaster, with nothing in between.
“This week, though, it might be in between.”
Newcastle will believe they can win
While a draw might end up being a decent result, Newcastle will go to Old Trafford believing they can win. As Sutton says, Howe isn’t going to change his style just because we’re playing one of the ‘big six’.
Newcastle will take the game to Man United, who might struggle to handle our high intensity approach. They have already played this week, winning 1-0 in the Europa League on Thursday.
Scott McTominay scored the only goal of the game against Omonia, but Erik ten Hag named a very strong starting lineup.
That could play into Newcastle’s hands, who have had a full week to recover since beating Brentford 5-1.
There is a lot of confidence among Toon fans. There is belief that we can go to Man United and get a result. Let’s hope that it’s not over confidence, however.
Sutton anticipates a 1-1 draw, which I think a lot fans would probably take if you offered them it right now.
