Alan Shearer has reacted to Newcastle’s important 1-1 draw with Watford at St James’ Park.
This was a huge clash at the bottom of the Premier League and saw Chris Wood make his debut in the famous black and white stripes.
Kieran Trippier also made his league debut for the Magpies, as Eddie Howe went in search of a reaction after the FA Cup elimination at the hands of League 1 Cambridge United.
Allan Saint-Maximin put Newcastle ahead early in the second half with a well-hit finish after a trademark mazy run and Shearer had his say.
His Match of the Day co-star Gary Lineker also praised Saint-Maximin’s run and finish, as well as commenting on Shearer’s reaction.
But Joao Pedro made it 1-1 two minutes from time as Howe’s side could not hold on for what would have been a massively important victory.
Newcastle took the lead in the reverse fixture earlier in the season and were dominant, but conceded late in that one as well.
Lightening struck twice here, and Shearer’s post match tweet was far less celebratory, as you would expect.
He was not happy with the low number of shots on target, as Newcastle did not have another aside from the goal.
That is despite Wood being signed ahead of the game and Newcastle facing what Shearer described as a ‘poor’ Watford side.
It was another disappointing afternoon for Shearer and Newcastle and a match after which confidence will not be boosted to any great degree.
