Alan Shearer is expectant ahead of Newcastle United vs Crystal Palace.

The Magpies kick off 2026 with a game against the Eagles at St James’ Park, as they aim to make it back-to-back wins in the Premier League.

Newcastle United beat Burnley 3-1 to end 2025 on a high, but that did not tell the whole story. Eddie Howe’s side struggled at Turf Moor, with the result only put beyond doubt when Bruno Guimaraes scored in the 93rd minute.

After the game, Alan Shearer said Newcastle United were a ‘tough watch’. That was putting it mildly, and the Toon Army will be expecting more of a show when Crystal Palace arrive on Tyneside.

Alan Shearer backs Newcastle United to beat Crystal Palace

That feeling is shared by Alan Shearer, who still expects Newcastle United to beat Crystal Palace on Sunday.

However, the Newcastle United legend has admitted to the Metro that it was ‘concerning’ to see Howe’s side allow Burnley back into the game after taking an early 2-0 lead.

“It’s tough for Newcastle as they didn’t play well the other night, but to get an away win in any Premier League game is a good thing,” he said.

“Just getting the three points at Burnley was massive for them.

“Letting Burnley back in was a bit concerning, but I’m hoping it’s another away win which gives them belief and confidence going forward.

“I would expect them to come back to St James’ Park and be roared on to a home victory.”

Result trumps performance away from home for Newcastle United

There was an air of disappointment after Newcastle United’s win over Burnley.

Of course, the three points were the most important thing, but the manner in which they got them was worrying.

However, it is perhaps one of those games where the result is all that really matters for Newcastle United. Victories away from home have been rare for the Magpies, so to get over the line despite being put under a lot of pressure should be commended.

The calibre of the opponent is irrelevant. When you have been as poor as Newcastle United have on the road, no away win should be sniffed at.

The result should give Howe’s side a much-needed confidence boost, which will aid them against Crystal Palace on Sunday.
