Lewis Miley earns ‘special mention’ from Eddie Howe after another Newcastle United masterclass

Lewis Miley continues to thrive at Newcastle United and his performance against Burnley did not go unnoticed by Eddie Howe.

After a miserable few days following Boxing Day’s defeat at Manchester United, Howe’s side claimed only their second away win of the Premier League season to date.

Indeed, Newcastle United beat Burnley 3-1 at Turf Moor, thanks to early goals from Yoane Wissa and Joelinton.

The Clarets pulled one back through Josh Laurent and pushed for another goal before Bruno Guimaraes sealed the three points with a brilliant late lob.

Following such an arduous – though admittedly important – victory, there weren’t too many individual performances to shout about.

Still, Howe was full of praise for Miley.

Miley is playing out of position at Newcastle, having been forced to fill in at right-back following an injury to Tino Livramento.

With none of Livramento, Kieran Trippier or Emil Krafth expected to return soon, the experiment will likely continue for the teenager.

If you could voice one concern to Eddie Howe about Newcastle United right now, what would it be?

Yes, I know we won, but let's not pretend that was great 😂

Right now, it feels almost certain that he will start in that position when Crystal Palace come to St James’ Park on Sunday.

Speaking about Miley’s performance, the Newcastle United manager told BBC Radio Newcastle: “Lewy Miley, I have to say a special mention to him. He’s playing full-back now and you sort of take for granted his performance levels but I think he’s been outstanding for us.”

Lewis Miley’s brilliant stats for Newcastle United against Burnley

The Newcastle United academy graduate continues to excel at full-back, which is no mean feat given the fact he’s barely played there in his senior career.

According to FotMob data, Miley was dribbled past just once against the Clarets, while he also won two tackles, made five clearances, won two interceptions and gave away no fouls.

It was another mature performance from a player who looks wise beyond his years.

At some point, Miley could return to his midfield role for Newcastle.

As it stands, however, there is little need to rush Livramento back into action.

Miley is inspiring the next generation of young Newcastle players with his rapid-fire progress in the first team.

The 19-year-old looks like one of the first names on the team sheet these days and it will be fascinating to see what becomes of him going forward.
