Pep Guardiola was not happy after Newcastle United’s win against Manchester City.

Multiple key decisions went Eddie Howe’s way, as Newcastle United beat Man City 2-1 at St James’ Park.

Manchester City had two penalty appeals turned down in the first half, while the Magpies’ winner was also controversial. Gianluigi Donnarumma claimed he was fouled in the build-up, but his protests were ignored as Harvey Barnes bagged a match-winning brace.

It could be a season-defining victory for the Magpies, but Pep Guardiola’s side returned to the North West with a sense of injustice.

However, Alan Shearer believes Manchester City have a bigger problem to worry about.

Prediction for Newcastle vs Man City?

Alan Shearer tells Pep Guardiola what to worry about after Newcastle United’s win over Manchester City

Newcastle United legend Shearer has spoken about the Magpies’ win over Manchester City on the latest episode of the Rest Is Football podcast.

He has admitted that Guardiola should be concerned by the number of chances his side conceded against Newcastle, rather than the refereeing decisions that went against his team.

“It was 0-0 at half time, how on earth it was 0-0,” he said.

“It should have been 4-4, because Haaland missed two big chances. Phil Foden missed two big chances. Harvey Barnes missed two big chances. He missed one after 30 seconds. Woltemade missed two big chances as well.

“I know Pep wasn’t happy with one or two decisions after the game, but I would be more worried about his team defensively rather than anything if I was Pep because the number of chances that Newcastle created.”

At times this season, Newcastle have been poor offensively. They have struggled to create opportunities, but that was not an issue on Saturday evening.

Howe found a way to consistently hurt Guardiola’s side, and the only worry was that missing those chances would come back to bite them.

Thankfully they didn’t, as Newcastle United picked up a famous victory.

What Eddie Howe and the pundits said about Newcastle United’s statement win over Manchester City.

Eddie Howe: “The performance from the team was there, the hunger was there, the motivation was there. That’s the key thing we have to take forward. I think if those qualities are there, with our delivery and the players that we have, we can beat anybody.”

Alan Shearer: “If Newcastle had their shooting boots on, they should have scored six or seven – they missed four absolute sitters.”

Jamie Redknapp: “When you have a blue-chip win like today, it shows you can compete. It shows you’ve got the players to compete and go toe-to-toe.”

Alan Shearer picks out five Newcastle United stars vs Manchester City

After a couple of shocking performances against West Ham and Brentford, Howe needed a response from his players against Man City.

He got that, with his team rising to the occasion. It was one of those nights when not a single Newcastle United player had a bad game.

There were excellent performances all over the pitch, with Shearer picking out five Toon stars for praise.

“From a Newcastle point of view, I thought they were absolutely outstanding,” he said.

“The two full-backs, Livramento and Hall, came in and gave them a much better balance, much more energy about their game. Midfield was much better, back to being tough and hard to play against. Tonali I thought was outstanding.

“Malick Thiaw I thought was brilliant. And obviously Harvey Barnes getting his goals. So it was back to being a Newcastle what we’ve become used to.”

All of the players Shearer picked out were exceptional. Hall and Livramento were transformative for Newcastle, while Barnes produced the golden moments.

But it was Malick Thiaw who was Newcastle’s best player. He was faultless against Man City, stopping an in-form Erling Haaland from scoring.

The Germany international was incredible, as he continues to look more and more of a bargain at £34million. He is undoubtedly Newcastle’s signing of the summer.
