Newcastle player ratings vs Man City as Lewis Hall transforms team and 8/10 star makes statement

Harvey Barnes scored twice as Newcastle United turned their season around with a 2-1 win over Manchester City.

Barnes scored either side of a Ruben Dias strike to hand Newcastle United a crucial three points at St James’ Park

Lewis Hall and Tino Livramento returned to give Eddie Howe’s side a major boost.

Newcastle could well have scored many more goals in what was a statement display.

Here’s how Geordie Boot Boys rated the players….

Nick Pope – 7

Did well to deny Erling Haaland from close range, while his proactive approach forced the City striker to shoot high and wide when Newcastle were carved open.

Tino Livramento – 8

What a return to action. Newcastle are a different team with Livramento and Hall in the side.

No signs of ring rust.

Who was your Newcastle United MOTM against Manchester City?

Malick Thiaw – 8

Did not give Erling Haaland a minute. What a player. Difficult to think of a better central defender in the Premier League of late.

Fabian Schar – 7

Looks worthy of a new contract. Sloppy passing at times but generally very strong.

Lewis Hall – 8

Looked like he’s never been away. Gave Newcastle a brilliant attacking outlet and was strong defensively.

Thomas Tuchel should have been watching. Hall simply has to go to the 2026 World Cup with England.

Sandro Tonali – 8

Imperious as ever. His energy gave Newcastle a brilliant outlet when they were under pressure.

Bruno Guimaraes – 7

Played in the deeper role today and looked much better for it. Guimaraes has had better games but that was still impressive.

Joelinton – 7

Much better here. Broke up play nicely and showed his ability on the ball. Has been questioned in recent months but this was the Joelinton of old.

Jacob Murphy – 7

Some brilliant crosses for Barnes and a fine shift at left-wing back.

Nick Woltemade – 7

Twice went close to a goal in the first half and arguably should have done better with both chances. Isolated for much of the game but some nice touches as ever. Crucial in the build-up to the goal.

Harvey Barnes – 8

Should have done much better with two chances in the first half but that does not matter now. Two crucial goals to turn Newcastle’s season around. Looked a lot better than Anthony Gordon in recent weeks.

A statement performance from Barnes, who is surely now Newcastle’s most effective left-winger ahead of Gordon.
