There was a sense of relief from Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer as the Magpies advanced to the next round of the Carabao Cup.

Eddie Howe‘s team needed penalties to beat Nottingham Forest, with the two Premier League sides drawing 1-1 in 90 minutes.

Newcastle United had taken the lead, with Joe Willock scoring in the first minute. It was an incredibly fast start, but it resulted in the Magpies regressing.

They were pegged back in the second half, with Jota Silva netting an equaliser.

Newcastle rallied late on, but were unable to find a winner within 90 minutes on the night that Sandro Tonali made his first appearance in 10 months. The 24-year-old did very well during his return, even if Kevin Nolan noticed Tonali breathing heavily within the first 15 minutes of his comeback!

The game went to penalties, with Newcastle winning 4-3. Sean Longstaff scored the winner for the Magpies, as they go in search of a return to Wembley after losing the 2023 Carabao Cup final to Manchester United.

Alan Shearer reacts as Newcastle edge past Nottingham Forest in the Carabao Cup

It was far from a convincing performance, and Alan Shearer summed that up with his reaction to the win on X (formally known as Twitter).

Following the conclusion of the penalty shootout, Shearer wrote on X: “Into the next round. Phewwwwwwww!!!”

Earlier in the game, Shearer was not happy with the goal that Newcastle United conceded.

Following Forest’s equaliser, he posted on X: “Oh come on man, a long throw.”

Newcastle avoid major early season setback

There was relief from Shearer, as Newcastle managed to get over the line and advance to the third round of the Carabao Cup.

It was another game in which Newcastle struggled, which has been a recurring theme at the start of the new season.

But the Magpies stood firm and advanced, even coming from behind in the penalty shootout after Joelinton’s miss.

Getting knocked out the cup early would have been a massive setback for the club, at a time when the fans are frustrated by the lack of transfer activity.

It does not look like Eddie Howe will be able to sign a winger and a centre-back, while it remains unclear which centre-back will arrive.

Marc Guehi is the top target, but Newcastle have Mohamed Simakan lined up as an alternative.

If it is Guehi who arrives, he will not feature in the next round of the Carabao Cup for Newcastle. That is because he would be cup-tied after playing for Crystal Palace against Norwich City on Tuesday night.
