Newcastle United might struggle to sign James Tarkowski in the January transfer window.
That’s according to the Northern Echo, who claim Burnley have no intention of selling their star defender when the window opens.
The Clarets are in a tricky position, as Tarkowski’s contract expires next summer, meaning January is their final chance to get some cash for him.
However, the report states that Sean Dyche would rather lose him for nothing than sell him to Newcastle next month.
That’s a blow for the Magpies, who have been heavily linked with Tarkowski.
The central defender was one of the first names linked with the club after the takeover. The Telegraph reported in October that Tarkowski could be one of the new owners’ first signings. It was even claimed he would be open to a move to St James’ Park.
But it looks like that won’t be happening if Dyche gets his way.
Newcastle look for Tarkowski alternatives
It has previously been reported that the Toon owners are confident of signing Tarkowski, and the Northern Echo state that Newcastle still plan to test Burnley’s resolve in January with an offer.
That’s definitely the right thing to do. While Burnley might not want to sell now, their attitude might change when their is money on the table.
Newcastle may have to pay over the odds to get Tarkowski, but he would certainly be worth it. While we looked better against Norwich, our defence has been appalling all season.
We haven’t signed a centre-back since 2018, so recruiting Tarkowski would be an exceptional piece of business.
However, the report adds that Newcastle are looking at alternatives, which is wise. While Tarkowski should be the number one target, we need other options if Burnley don’t play ball.
Even if we do get Tarkowski, another centre-back wouldn’t go amiss with how we’ve performed at the back this season.
Burnley’s stance is clear, but there is surely another twist in this transfer saga.
