Fresh report provides update on Callum Wilson's chances of starting against USA on Friday

An injury concern for Harry Kane will have Newcastle’s Callum Wilson dreaming of starting for England against USA on Friday night.

The Three Lions skipper picked up an ankle problem in the 6-2 win over Iran, that eventually led to Wilson replacing him in the second half.

It was reported by the Athletic on Tuesday night that Kane would undergo a scan on his ankle ahead of the USA game, making him a doubt for England’s second group game.

This presented a possible opportunity for Wilson, who provided an assist in the victory against Iran on Monday. If Kane were to be ruled out, it would increase the possibility of Newcastle’s number nine being named in the starting XI.

Wilson has only ever started once for England. That was on his debut in 2018, which, funnily enough, was against Friday’s opponents USA.

Gareth Southgate’s team take on America once again this week, but a fresh update has dented Wilson’s hopes of a second start in England colours.

Bad news for Wilson with Kane available against USA

According to the Daily Mail, England are optimistic that Kane will be fit for Friday’s game against USA.

They add that the 29-year-old is awaiting the results of the scan, but there is hope that he hasn’t suffered an injury to his ankle.

That’s good news for England, as it would have been a real blow to lose the captain so early in the tournament. Kane will be vital to any success the Three Lions have in Qatar, and impressed against Iran despite not scoring. He provided two assists, setting up Raheem Sterling and Marcus Rashford.

But the good news for Kane is bad news for Wilson. With Kane likely to be fit, it makes it extremely unlikely that the Toon 30-year-old will start.

Hopefully we see him feature off the bench once again, as it was incredibly exciting to see him feature against Iran. It meant two Newcastle players were on the pitch at once, with Kieran Trippier even donning the captain’s armband.

But while Trippier will surely keep his place in Southgate’s starting lineup, Wilson will probably have to settle for a role on the bench following the latest update on Kane’s fitness.
