Newcastle's Nick Pope now has golden chance to stake World Cup claim

Nick Pope will hope to go to the World Cup with England this winter, and the Newcastle stopper now has a golden opportunity to prove his worth.

The 30-year-old has started the season brilliantly with Newcastle, having joined the Magpies for £10million from Burnley.

He made the move to help his international career, having suffered relegation to the Championship last season. The move to St James’ Park is going very well, and Pope will fancy his chances of being on the plane to Qatar.

And now he might have an opportunity to prove he should be Gareth Southgate’s number one.

Jordan Pickford injury could boost Nick Pope’s World Cup chances

According to the Athletic, England regular Jordan Pickford has picked up a thigh injury that could rule him out for a month.

That’s a real blow for Everton, who haven’t started the new season too well. Frank Lampard’s side are currently 16th in the table, without a win from any of their first six games.

However, it is also news that will worry England boss Gareth Southgate. The Three Lions are in action soon, with two Nations League games coming up against Italy and Germany later this month.

Pickford now seems certain to miss both games, meaning someone else will have to play in goal.

Southgate does have options, with Aaron Ramsdale likely to be in the squad. But it’s Pope who deserves an opportunity.

Newcastle’s number 22 has started the season in sensational form, keeping three clean sheets so far. One of those came away to Brighton, where Adam Lallana called him ‘world class‘ after the game.

His distribution has also been very good, which is an area of his game that has previously been criticised.

Pope is delivering for Newcastle, and deserves the chance to prove he can deliver for England. If he features in the upcoming Nations League games and impresses, he could stake a major claim to become the number one for the World Cup.

All he needs is for Southgate to give him a chance.
