England are through to the next round of the World Cup, with Callum Wilson and co winning 3-0 against Wales on Tuesday night.

The Newcastle United striker featured off the bench for the second time in the tournament, once again replacing Harry Kane. Wilson played most of the second half, coming on in the 58th minute.

By then the game was won thanks to goals from Marcus Rashford and Phil Foden. However, the Three Lions managed to add one more while Wilson was on the pitch.

A clever long ball from Kalvin Phillips handed Rashford a chance, who twisted and turned to smash it past Danny Ward for his third goal of the tournament. It was a good job he did score, as Wilson was in a wonderful position himself and begging to receive the ball.

He didn’t, but luckily Rashford’s powerful effort found the net anyway.

Wilson has now made two appearances at the World Cup so far, and is yet to score a goal. However, he has certainly impressed, and reacted to the game on Instagram after the final whistle.

The 30-year-old posted a picture to his official Instagram account after the game, toasting another impressive performance from the three Lions.

Alongside the picture, he wrote: “Solid team performance tonight 🙌🏽 knockouts next! Lets gooo 🤩.”

It certainly was a solid team performance from England. They looked a lot better going forwards than they did against USA, while they got the clean sheet that alluded them versus Iran.

Gareth Southgate’s side are into the next round, and face Senegal on Sunday night for a place in the quarter finals. England are ticking along nicely, and will fancy their chances of at least making it through to the final eight.

As for the Newcastle players, they are certainly playing their part. Kieran Trippier also got minutes last night, coming off the bench to slot in at left-back. He didn’t have much to do, but ensured England kept possession and saw the game out.

However, it was a much more lively appearance from Wilson. He was a focal point up top, and looked a lot more dangerous than Kane.

The Tottenham striker has been criticised for coming too deep in an England shirt, but Wilson didn’t do that. He held it up with his back to goal and ran in behind, stretching the Wales defence.

He almost got another assist too, creating some good chances for his England teammates.

While there’s no way he will start over captain Kane, Newcastle’s number nine is making the most of his appearances off the bench and giving Southgate something to consider.
