Newcastle United striker Callum Wilson has posted a response to Harry Kane after he missed a penalty during England’s 2-1 loss to France last night.

The 30-year-old was an unused substitute last night, as the Tottenham man led the line for the Three Lions as the nation’s captain.

Having already scored a penalty to tie the scoring earlier in the game, Kane stepped up to the spot-kick again as England trailed 2-1.

Unfortunately, the forward struck the ball above the crossbar, and Gareth Southgate’s side failed to capitalise on the six remaining minutes of normal time – bowing out of the tournament.

Taking to Instagram after the loss, Kane posted about how disappointed he was, taking responsibility for what happened.

A myriad of players took to the comments to share their solidarity with the Spurs striker, who cannot be blamed for missing a penalty on the world’s biggest stage.

Wilson posted a reaction to the post, sharing a wordless message of two love hearts – showing sympathy from one striker to another, towards his national teammate.

Wilson consoles Kane

As a back-up to the England captain, Wilson could have easily ignored the post. However, demonstrated by the incredible spirit and camaraderie amongst the Three Lions squad, this was never going to be the case.

Kane always started for Southgate at the World Cup, but the Toon no.9 made a number of impressive performances off the bench.

In just 14 minutes of play against Iran, the Magpies forward bagged an assist in the side’s 6-2 win, whilst he played 33 minutes in England’s 3-0 victory over Wales.

Wilson failed to grace the pitch against Senegal and subsequently, France last night. A cameo off the bench could’ve been disruptive to Didier Deschamps’ defence, as he would’ve provided an alternative play-style for the Three Lions attack to exploit.

Either way, it was a sad ending for the England squad out in Qatar. A solid campaign saw a number of brilliant performances, but it just wasn’t meant to be yesterday.
