Journalist Luke Edwards has now suggested that Newcastle United could be interested in signing an impressive Wolves player.
Newcastle have a long list of players they would love to bring into their team, though the funds they currently have in January make it almost impossible to bring in even just one new signing.
Now, speaking on Transfer Gossip Daily, Edwards has claimed he wouldn’t be surprised if Newcastle were looking at Wolves’ Pedro Neto who has been so good this season despite his injury.
Newcastle may target key Wolves man who is in high demand
Newcastle’s January window has been very quiet so far but they are sure to be one of the busiest clubs in the summer with the number of players with expiring contracts, players who could move on and big-name targets identified by the club.
One position Eddie Howe has been keen to upgrade in is at right-wing which has been largely dominated by Miguel Almiron for the last five years with the currently injured Jacob Murphy as his backup.
While they are two very hardworking players who will do anything Howe asks them, the quality of the pair isn’t what you would expect from a team with Champions League aspirations.
Neto, however, could be just that with a number of teams after his signature following a brilliant first half of the season in which he recorded nine goals and assists in 10 games for Wolves before injuring his hamstring against Newcastle.
On the show, Edwards said: “I think Neto is going to be a fantastic signing for someone and I think Wolves are another club who have had their profit and sustainability rules worries.
“I think a lot of people are looking at Neto, he has played over 100 games in the Premier League now and whenever I see Wolves play I love watching him.
“I wouldn’t be surprised if Newcastle are interested in Neto, I think a lot of clubs in the Premier League will be.
“Wolves won’t want to lose him but I just wonder if that’s a player who will outgrow where Wolves are as a club and I think a lot of the big boys, a lot of the rich clubs, will be interested.”
Newcastle need to revitalise their attack
Things have looked just a little bit stale at times for Newcastle and their form has suffered because of it, dropping to 10th in the league and top four now looks almost completely out of reach.
It could force the owners to react and go all out in the summer as they look to get back amongst Europe’s elite, but they’ll need a number of new players to do that.
While Anthony Gordon has been a breath of fresh air down the left, Newcastle need to find someone to have a similar effect on the opposite flank and take the pressure off of the former Everton man.
Of course, it all depends on how highly Wolves value Neto and what their asking fee will be, but, like Newcastle, they are also struggling financially and may need to sell a big player to grow the squad.
