Newcastle United are going to be in the Champions League next season, and have now been given the chance to sign a player who was involved in one of the competition’s best ever moments.
Lucas Moura is due to become a free agent this summer as he prepares to leave Tottenham Hotspur when his contract expires.
The Brazilian forward will likely be a man in demand given his talents, and Newcastle are one of the clubs who could be in contention to sign the 30-year-old.
Newcastle offered Lucas Moura
That is because the Chronicle claim that Newcastle have been offered the chance to sign Moura ahead of next season. The report states that the club have been contacted by his representatives regarding a possible move to St James’ Park.
The Chronicle add that Moura is open to joining Eddie Howe’s side, where he would get to play alongside fellow Brazilians Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton. A deal would also see him reunited with Kieran Trippier, who he played alongside at Tottenham.
But while Moura is keen on the move, it remains to be seen if Newcastle feel the same.
He does have Champions League experience
While a free transfer for Moura would not massively turn heads, he is certainly a talented player. And he is someone who has experience of playing in the Champions League.
In fact, he inspired Tottenham’s greatest ever night in the competition.
With 45 minutes to go in the 2019 Champions League semi final, Spurs trailed Ajax by three goals. It looked all but certain that they were going to be eliminated from the competition.
However, they were rescued by a ‘wonderful‘ Lucas Moura hat-trick. He scored three second half goals to send Spurs through to the final, with the decisive strike coming in the 96th minute. It was an incredible moment, and one that will be remembered as one of the greatest in the competition’s history.
But while it was a truly astonishing night, it was four years ago. Lucas’ impact at Spurs has diminished as of late, and now he is set to become a free agent.
While Newcastle have been offered the chance to sign him, it would be a huge surprise if Howe said yes.
