What Alan Shearer has said about Gini Wijnaldum, amid Newcastle transfer links

Newcastle United are being linked with a shock move for Gini Wijnaldum.

TEAMtalk have claimed that the Magpies are interested in bringing the 83-cap Netherlands international back to St. James’ Park.

Wijnaldum has not had a great time at Paris Saint-Germain since moving there in the summer.

The star has made 18 appearances so far this season, but only nine of those have been starts.

Competition for places is fierce, and it hasn’t been plain sailing for the ace.

Newcastle are said to be keeping tabs on the situation, despite the club’s sporting director Leonardo insisting Wijnaldum is going nowhere.

Newcastle re-signing Wijnaldum would be quite the story.

He became something of a cult hero during his two-year spell at the club.

He was good then, but he became great at Liverpool.

His best form probably came a couple of years ago, and Alan Shearer gave a glowing verdict on the player.

He said (BBC Sport): “Wijnaldum is Mr Consistent. I don’t think Liverpool would be where they are without his performances.

“He offers solidity and is a leader in that midfield. Not many people mention him compared to the others, but he has been a regular 8/10 each week.”

Midfield leader Wijnaldum would be a fantastic signing for Newcastle

Shearer’s comments came a couple of years ago, but they were applicable even as Wijnaldum came to the end of his stint at Newcastle.

The 31-year-old is a top player with a brilliant engine. He can sit in midfield, or he can play a bit further up as he does for his country.

If there is any chance Wijnaldum could leave PSG already, Newcastle should be ready to elbow aside the competition.

Eddie Howe needs a midfield leader. And he needs someone who can bring consistency.

It’s unlikely to happen if we’re being honest, but Wijnaldum – with all his Premier League experience – would be a fine addition.
