Versatile PL defender open to summer move amid Newcastle interest

Newcastle United could potentially make a move for Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah with it being believed that the player would be open to the move.

The future of Trevoh Chalobah is up in the air according to transfer journalist Ben Jacobs who told the NUFC Matters Podcast that he thinks Chalobah would be open to a move to Newcastle.

Jacobs noted that he doesn’t really see where Chalobah fits at Chelsea right now and that could prompt a summer move, saying: “I don’t see too much pathway for him at Chelsea if I’m perfectly honest.

“The advantage for him at Chelsea is the fact that he can play centre-back, right-back or defensive midfield and that could be the appeal to Newcastle as well.

“It’s difficult to really understand where he still gets his game time at Chelsea and that may create a window of opportunity.

“I would term the future uncertain at the moment and I would say that the player may be open to a move away, but I think from [Mauricio] Pochettino’s point of view he really hasn’t decided yet and he wants to assess a lot of these players, the same with Conor Gallagher as well, who has been historically linked to Newcastle, before any categorical decision has been made.

“Newcastle were well aware of Chalobah in January as well, the same for Gallagher.

“But it’s not 100% clear at this point whether Chelsea will want to sell. But the player would be open, so I would say it’s one to watch. But nothing I’m aware of that is concrete on the player or club side yet.”

Chalobah could be seen as the long-term replacement for Fabian Schar

Chalobah’s versatility could make him a very useful addition to Newcastle’s squad, but I don’t see him replacing anyone in that back-line straight away, however he could be groomed to replace Fabian Schar. He’s certainly got the potential.

The 24-year-old made 25 Premier League appearances last season, 18 of which were were starts and 15 of those he played the full game, so he was quite a consistent part of last season’s Chelsea side.

This is another one of those moves that isn’t going to get the Toon Army jumping around their living room in celebration but could turn out to be a very smart investment.
