Newcastle United have apparently not made a late swoop for Bournemouth midfielder David Brooks.
The Magpies were claimed by talkSPORT to have made a bid for the Wales international.
The nature of the bid was not disclosed, and the tweet has now actually been deleted.
Brooks, 24, has been with the Cherries since 2018, joining from Sheffield United.
The star has clocked 87 appearances for the south coast club so far.
Back at the start of June, Brooks said that he was unsure where he would be playing his football next (this) season.
He talked up playing at the top level, and obviously Bournemouth failed to achieve promotion back to the Premier League earlier this year.
It seems Newcastle might have been looking to try and take advantage of the Cherries’ failure.
The claim certainly came of the blue.
It got a bit of reaction on Twitter before it was deleted. Ex-Magpie Steve Howey had said: “If Newcastle do sign Brooks from Bournemouth then that’s decent as I think he is a good player, surprised not more in for him.”
But Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie has insisted there is no interest from Newcastle in Brooks.
Brooks would have been a good signing
It is a shame Brooks to Newcastle appears to be a no-go.
He is a talented player, and would definitely have increased the competition amongst the forward players.
While Brooks would have been nice to have, the Magpies really need a central defender before tonight’s deadline.
From what we have seen so far in 2021/22 there is a vulnerability at the back.
Getting a central defender who can play on the left side really is the most important thing in the coming hours.
