‘Top player’: Goalkeeper now raves about ‘clinical’ 24-year-old who Newcastle reportedly want

Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford has lavished praise on reported Newcastle United transfer target Christian Pulisic.

Taking to a press conference ahead of England’s World Cup clash against the United States on Friday, the shot-stopper spoke of the difficulty facing the Chelsea forward.

“He’s a top player,” said Pickford.

“I have played against him for a few years now at Chelsea. He’s good with both feet and very clinical. We have to be wary of him.

“But we practise on the training pitch every day. Me, Ramsdale and Pope. We are preparing for anything really.”

According to Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie, the Magpies were keen on bringing the 24-year-old to St James’ Park on transfer deadline day. However, without a replacement, Chelsea were reluctant to sanction the move.

Pickford praises reported Newcastle target Pulisic

Before Miguel Almiron took the Premier League by storm this term, Newcastle manager Eddie Howe was keen on bringing in a right-sided winger to the club.

After failing to secure Leicester City’s James Maddison with a £50m bid, the Toon turned their attention elsewhere.

Pulisic was a name which regularly came up, and out of favour in London, rumours emerged of a Tyneside switch.

Having earned statistical comparisons to Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford and Arsenal’s Gabriel Martinelli, there is no wonder why.

In 53 appearances for the US national team, the attacker has bagged 21 goals and 13 assists.

Pulisic’s eye for goal and electric pace make him a prolific scorer who can either play centrally or out wide.

However, having started just three Premier League games this season, his stock has certainly decreased at Chelsea.

Therefore, if Newcastle ended up making another approach in January, it is likely the 24-year-old would jump at the chance to leave west London.

If Howe still wants to bring in a new attacker by then, Pulisic could be a fantastic option to go for.
