The real reason why Tosin Adarabioyo is signing for Chelsea over Newcastle is not the wages

Newcastle United are missing out on Tosin Adarabioyo, in what is an early blow to their summer transfer plans.

The Magpies are closing in on a deal for Lloyd Kelly, and the club were hoping he would be joined by Tosin Adarabioyo.

Newcastle were confident about signing both players late last month, only for Chelsea to swoop in and spoil the party.

Rumours of an approach from the Blues caused concern on Tyneside, and it has ultimately led to Tosin opting to remain in West London. It was reported on Saturday that the 26-year-old is going to sign for Chelsea, with Newcastle pulling out of negotiations.

It is massively disappointing to miss out, and the immediate assumption is that Chelsea offered better wages than Newcastle.

Why Chelsea’s offer to Tosin was more appealing than Newcastle’s

However, that is not the case according to Give Me Sport, who have provided an update on Tosin’s move from Craven Cottage to Stamford Bridge.

According to Give Me Sport, Chelsea’s offer to Tosin is worth about the same per week as Newcastle’s. They claim that both clubs offered the defender more than £100,000-a-week.

However, they report that Chelsea offered him a longer contract, as well as the capacity to earn more should they qualify for the Champions League.

Newcastle must reassess their plans after Tosin snub

So, in a roundabout way, it is still about money – just not necessarily the weekly wages on offer.

Regardless, it is disappointing to miss out, but not the end of the world. While Newcastle obviously found this deal appealing given it was going to be a free transfer, that should not tell the full story.

Would the Magpies have been interested in Tosin if he was not set to become a free agent? Possibly not. That may soften the blow of missing out, as the club decides what to do next regarding their centre-back search.

Kelly is on course to arrive, but he is left-footed. With Tosin no longer joining, Newcastle could still do with someone to compete with Fabian Schar as the right-sided centre-back. Tosin would have been ideal for that role, but alas he is heading elsewhere.

Instead, he will move to Chelsea, where he will face a lot of competition to get in the starting XI, joining a club that is far from stable behind the scenes. Good luck to him.
