Surprise twist as Newcastle United set Harvey Barnes asking price as they aim to end PSR nightmare

Newcastle United know a big sale could really help their PSR position during the January transfer window.

It is well documented that Newcastle need to sell before they buy, which could result in the likes of Miguel Almiron or Kieran Trippier leaving the club.

However, neither of them will command the type of fee that could transform the Magpies’ PSR position. A departure for Alexander Isak or Bruno Guimaraes would do that, but they are absolutely not for sale.

But it could be a different story for Harvey Barnes, who has been tentatively linked with a move away from St James’ Park in 2025.

Newcastle United set Harvey Barnes asking price

It was claimed late last year that Newcastle would consider offers for Barnes, who has struggled to nail down a place in Eddie Howe’s starting XI since his £39million arrival from Leicester City.

Unsurprisingly, it has been reported that Barnes is frustrated by his lack of starts, as the Magpies prepare to receive interest in the 27-year-old.

It remains to be see who could be keen, but any interested party will have to fork out a major fee to land Barnes.

That is according to the Telegraph, who report that Newcastle want more than £45million to sell Barnes during the January transfer window.

January exit feels unlikely for Barnes

While selling Barnes for £45million would put a temporary end to Newcastle’s PSR problem and allow them to properly reinvest, it feels incredibly unlikely that the England international will be on his way out of St James’ Park.

A deal worth £45million would see Newcastle make a profit, but it is difficult to envision anyone paying that kind of money for Barnes during the January transfer window.

He would likely want to stay in the Premier League, and it is hard to see who would actually be able to afford him midway through the season. Plenty of clubs have PSR concerns, while many are reluctant to spend in January when transfer fees are often inflated.

Selling Barnes could be an ideal solution to Newcastle’s financial issues, but it would be a surprise if the winger was no longer wearing black and white when the window slams shut.
