Some sources now don’t see Newcastle winning race to sign ‘top’ player relegated from the Premier League

In an ideal world, Newcastle United would be able to strengthen in every position going this summer.

After such an arduous campaign to have stretched Eddie Howe’s squad across all competitions, reinforcements all over the park would be most welcome for Newcastle.

Still, at this early stage of the off-season, two positions look like the early priority.

Indeed, the club are confident about signing both Lloyd Kelly and Tosin Adarabioyo on free transfers from Bournemouth and Fulham respectively in an effort to bolster defensive ranks.

Given the alarming drop-off in defending during the season just gone compared to Howe’s first full campaign in charge, that feels like a hugely positive step.

Another area the club look like focusing on is in goal.

Martin Dubravka, who hasn’t always convinced when stepping up to cover for Nick Pope, will reportedly be allowed to leave the club this summer.

Pope himself is said to want to stay, although names are being linked.

There were claims earlier this month that Newcastle had held positive talks with Arsenal over the potential signing of Aaron Ramsdale, while more recent suggestions hint at the club looking to sign Valencia stopper Giorgi Mamardashvili imminently.

Now, another name, one described as a “top” goalkeeper by Vincent Kompany despite eventually being relegated from the Premier League has been linked.

Newcastle target James Trafford but Chelsea lead the transfer race

According to The Sun, Newcastle are interested in Burnley goalkeeper, James Trafford.

The report, however, says sources close to the situation instead see free-spending Chelsea winning the race to sign him, with the Blues ready to make a £20m bid.

Newcastle seem intent on signing a new goalkeeper

Obviously, you can never predict the future.

Still, with Loris Karius seemingly joining Dubravka in getting set to leave, it seems obvious Newcastle are making a big ploy to strengthen their goalkeeping department.

Trafford may not have fully convinced for the Clarets but is clearly rated amongst some circles, having been named in England’s provisional squad for Euro 2024.

Given the stature of reported targets, with all of Trafford, Ramsdale and Mamardashvili boasting reasonably big reputations, it seems Newcastle really want to sign big competition for Pope.

A statement of intent, it seems.
