Newcastle United are now at the final stages of the Harvey Barnes transfer and are closing in on Tino Livramento but now it seems like Eddie Howe is not done yet in the summer transfer market.

Sky Sports journalist Pete Graves took to Twitter this morning to give a transfer update on Newcastle United saying: “[Sandro] Tonali was always No1 target. Harvey Barnes is now very close, awaiting announcement. Hoping to add highly rated versatile defender Tino Livramento – talks ongoing. A young LB has also been discussed. Possibly loan. Other loan to buy deals also possible.”

With the Magpies set to unveil their new third kit at 9am, fans were hoping that they will take the opportunity to reveal Harvey Barnes at the same time but it never came to pass.

Eddie Howe still needs a left-back and could have someone in mind

As reported earlier, Newcastle are moving closer to a deal for Southampton full-back Tino Livramento, but as he’s predominantly a right-back it does leave the question looming of what Eddie Howe plans to do about the left-back situation.

Matt Targett only joined the club on a permanent deal last summer yet only played 17 times in the Premier League for the Magpies due to a mix of injuries and Dan Burn‘s form making him un-droppable.

However now, with an increase in fixtures and more pressure on the side to achieve, Eddie Howe will need a left-back who is capable of getting forward to support the attacking play as much as Kieran Trippier does on the right flank. Dan Burn is a capable left-back but not exactly adept at roaming forward. Targett is better at attacking, but still not as forward-thinking as Trippier.

According to Pete Graves, Eddie Howe could take to the loan market to find himself a young left-back who fits the bill.

Newcastle have been heavily linked with Federico Chiesa

No hints yet as to who it could be, and given that he’s looking at loans that could rule out Kieran Tierney who has been linked to Newcastle for a while. It’s believed Tierney is keen on a return to Celtic and that would likely be a permanent deal which Arsenal would prefer over a loan.

As for other loan-to-buy deals, one name that was swirling around the rumour mill on Twitter last night was Federico Chiesa, as has been for a while, but as yet there have been no reports to corroborate that rumour.

Things have certainly picked up pace in the transfer market for Eddie Howe’s Newcastle so I expect things will move much more quickly now, especially once the Allan Saint-Maximin move is confirmed and the FFP shackles are loosened.
