Sky Sports journalist Pete Graves has shared an update on Newcastle United’s pursuit of AC Milan midfielder Sandro Tonali.

Much like the alleged Nicolo Barella link last week, Newcastle‘s interest in Sandro Tonali form AC Milan is dominating the media at the moment.

The Athletic have reported that the Magpies have made a £43million bid for Tonali as they hope to add two midfielders to the ranks this summer.

Pete Graves has confirmed that Tonali is a primary target for Newcastle

Pete Graves of Sky Sports has added fuel to the fire tweeting: “A bit more on #NUFC. Club very keen on Tonali. Working on striking a deal with Milan. They have alternative options on their list (including Barella). However Tonali and [James] Maddison are the primary targets currently.”

The Maddison deal is seemingly chugging along in the background while Sandro Tonali dominates the Newcastle United headlines.

The 23-year-old defensive midfielder is already an established Italy international with 14 senior caps and is a key figure in AC Milan’s side making 48 appearances in all competitions last season. He scored two goals and provided 10 assists along the way from the heart of midfield.

Tonali will also captain Italy’s U21 side at this month’s Under 21 European Championships.

It has been reported that Newcastle will be willing to double Tonali’s wages in order to secure the move which is a huge signal of intent by the Magpies.

Eddie Howe needs a defensive midfielder this summer with his plan being to allow Bruno Guimaraes more freedom to get forward next term.

Milan may push Newcastle on the price

Bringing in a player like Tonali, who has a wealth of Champions League experience is imperative to any success Newcastle may have next season. While Newcastle have plenty of good players on the books already, there aren’t many who can boast Champions League experience.

If Dan Ashworth can pull this one off it would definitely turn some heads. I imagine Milan will push us hard on the price as they don’t need to sell this summer so they could make life difficult for us.

Just the fact that we’re linked with the likes of Tonai and Barella and it’s believable is amazing.
