Lee Charnley has certainly been a busy man this summer.
After securing the signatures of Callum Wilson, Ryan Fraser, Jamal Lewis, Jeff Hendrick and Mark Gillespie, it’s now time to focus on the other aspect of the window – exits.
Steve Bruce has a number of players who he needs to get rid of according to The Northern Echo.
There are seven names involved. They include £9.5 million man Yoshinori Muto and £12 million Rafa Benitez signing Jacob Murphy, as well as Henri Saivet, Rolando Aarons, Achraf Lazaar, DeAndre Yedlin and Dan Barlaser.
The aforementioned £21.5 million duo of Murphy and Muto headline that group given their price tags.
Incidentally, the club reportedly offered to pay up the contracts of Lazaar and Aarons, although neither player accepted the Magpies’ terms.
While you might think that’s a lot of players to deem surplus to requirements, Bruce has given his reasons.
The Toon Army boss told the Northern Echo: ‘I’ve got 28 (outfield players), and I’ve got to whittle that down to 22.
‘There’s going to be three, four, five people hanging around unfortunately. They need to go and play somewhere. Over the next few weeks before the deadline, we’ve got to move people out.’
You simply can’t argue with Bruce’s explanation.
We can’t have these players roaming around St James’ Park without any chance of featuring, all the while picking up their wages and making no impact on the first-team.
If anything, they could prove detrimental to the morale at the training ground if they stay, depending on how they react to being transfer-listed.
