The full-back was reported to be a target for Eddie Howe heading into the January window.

In the end, Gosens made a move to reigning Serie A champions Inter Milan. The player has signed on loan, with Inter obligated to buy him for £21 million in the summer (Goal).

He was one of several left-backs Newcastle had a look at.

Ultimately, Newcastle sealed a loaned deal for Aston Villa’s Matt Targett, with the player making the move official on deadline day.

But Gosens has revealed there was a contract offer from Newcastle.

The player told German magazine Kicker: “I had a contract offer, but I rejected it. I would have jeopardised my sporting goals.

“I think it’s very human to think about it. If you can earn many times more for the same job at a different club, show me someone who just says ‘No, thank you’.”

There had been a claim that PIF were actually willing to quadruple Gosens’ wages to bring him to St. James’ Park.

Including bonuses, Gosens could potentially have earned around £10 million from the three-and-a-half-year deal that was on the table.

Naturally, Gosens was tempted to join Newcastle given the wages that were being dangled before him.

But at this early stage of Newcastle under PIF, offering lucrative financial packages was never going to be enough for some.

For a lot of players, that is an instant turn-off. Especially for those who being tracked by other clubs in stronger positions.

Gosens can’t really be blamed for joining Inter. They are reigning league champions and top of the table again right now. He was likely also already quite settled in Italy having been with Atalanta since 2017.
