Everton forward Anthony Gordon is set to sign a new contract with the Merseyside club, after Newcastle United failed to sign him over the summer.

That’s according to The Telegraph, who claim the 21-year-old is close to pledging his future to the Toffees by penning a new long-term deal.

Frank Lampard hopes this will fend off any transfer interest in the January window.

During the summer, the Magpies were keenly looking to add a wide player to Eddie Howe’s squad.

Gordon became of interest after a strong season the season prior. Consequently, the Tyneside outfit reportedly made a £35m bid for the youngster, but this came to no avail.

Everton were also able to fend off big money offers from Chelsea.

Gordon move now off the table

With Gordon set to extend his deal at Goodison Park, the Toffees will be able to charge what they like when it comes to a sale.

This makes the probability of a switch to Tyneside highly unlikely, as Dan Ashworth would deem this a poor business decision to make.

However, in the grand scheme of things, this is a shame. The 21-year-old has impressed since breaking through into a relatively poor Everton team, proving to be a bright spark when Lampard’s side were struggling.

The Scouser has even been hailed as ‘special’ by pundit Dean Ashton, and the attacker is what Howe and co are looking for.

With over a decade left at the top level, Gordon has bags of time to improve. With the versatility to play anywhere across the front line, the youngster could have also made a strong impact for the Magpies upon his arrival at St James’ Park.

However, this transfer now appears to be off the table.
