Newcastle are plotting a raid on Serie A during the summer following the takeover by PIF. Tuttosport claims that Juventus star Matthijs De Ligt is one of five names under consideration by the Magpies.

The Dutch international signed for the Old Lady in 2019. He is viewed as one of European football’s most exciting talents and has been a handy player for Juventus.

Since making the move to Italy he has played 83 times for the Turin giants, scoring six goals and claiming two assists. Naturally, it’s his defensive work that has drawn the most praise, however.

De Ligt is an uncompromising central defender and Newcastle will almost certainly target a new enforcer or two.

The 22-year-old has bags of potential. He came through the ranks at Ajax and earned himself a big move to Serie A.

The report claims that Newcastle will also target Federico Chiesa and ultimately that seems ludicrous. He is one of Europe’s most-watched players after Euro 2020 and could probably pick his club next summer.

De Ligt signed for Juventus in a deal worth £67.5 million, penning a five-year contract. With that in mind, he won’t come cheap and that’s before a wage packet has been discussed.

Pigs are starting to fly: De Ligt is a pipedream for Newcastle

Quite frankly some of the rumours since last week’s takeover have been ridiculous. This is one of them!

De Ligt won’t be swapping Juventus for Newcastle in a million years. Even if he did decide to leave Italy, he would have the world’s best clubs in a long line looking to take him.

The defender previously spoke fondly of Ronaldo. He suggested on the club’s official website that the current Manchester United man was his role model.

The defender also earns £214,000-a-week and Newcastle surely won’t start throwing those wages out in the short term.

It will be nice for Newcastle fans to dream about De Ligt strutting his stuff at St James’ Park, although, for now, it’s pretty unrealistic.
