Newcastle have offered a contract to Dortmund midfielder Axel Witsel, according to Tutto Juve.
The 32-year-old will be out of contract in the summer and is open to a move away from the Bundesliga.
Newcastle aren’t the only club in the mix to sign him, with Juventus also keen on the Belgian.
The Magpies will be keen to make some signings during January but they’re also setting their sights on the summer.
Newcastle are going pretty big on Witsel too. The report claims that the contract he’s been offered is worth around £170,000-a-week.
Witsel has been a regular in the Dortmund team this season, starting nine of their 11 Bundesliga games.
It doesn’t seem as though a new deal will be forthcoming though, with the German outfit placing emphasis on younger players.
That could be music to the ears of Newcastle, although interest from Juventus will make them nervous.
January will see Eddie Howe target players capable of keeping the club in the Premier League.
Newcastle are the only team in the Premier League without a win this season and there will be a short-term plan.
If the Magpies avoid a drop into the Championship, the summer looks set to be an exciting time.
Several elite players will be targeted and Witsel would represent a strong start to the PIF era at St James’ Park.
Witsel could be ideal for Newcastle
Although he’s 32 now, the 120-cap star is vastly experienced and would kick-start a new revolution just nicely at Newcastle.
During his career, he has played for Zenit, Benfica and Standard Liege. He also spent a short time playing for Tianjin Tianhai.
Newcastle will need reinforcements all over the park and another midfielder or two wouldn’t go amiss.
Witsel has an abundance of experience and Newcastle should pull out the stops for the midfielder in the summer.
