According to Caracol, Newcastle were interested in landing Atletico Madrid right-back Santiago Arias, a player who Everton and Wolves were also keeping tabs on.
However, a fresher report from Gianluca Di Marzio has now revealed that Bayer Leverkusen are close to signing the former PSV Eindhoven full-back, who Juventus and Napoli were also eyeing in the past.
When the Colombian was with the Eredivisie outfit, their technical director Marcel Brands spoke very highly of Arias.
The man who now works for Everton told PSV’s official website: ‘He is the perfect model of the modern defender: pacey, powerful and attack-minded. There are not many players with such qualities.’
Despite his attractiveness as a player, it now appears that Newcastle are set to miss out.
That is even despite the fact Arias has a bargain €15 million (£13.8 million) price tag according to a report from Goal.
The 28-year-old is an experienced figure, having amassed 53 caps for Colombia, while also winning three Dutch titles and also the UEFA Super Cup with Diego Simeone’s side.
His impressive CV makes it all the more worse that Newcastle have missed out.
Arias surely would’ve provided strong competition to Javier Manquillo and DeAndre Yedlin, but it now looks like a Bundesliga move is close for the Medellín-born defender.
Back to the drawing board for Bruce and Lee Charnley it is.
